Former Canada coach John Herdman has been named the new head coach of Indonesia, the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) confirmed on Saturday.
The 50 year old Englishman previously guided Canada’s women’s team to bronze medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games before leading the country’s men’s team to qualification for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Canada’s first appearance at the finals in 36 years.
Herdman also enjoyed success with New Zealand’s women’s team, taking them to the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2007 and 2011. Most recently, he served as head coach of Major League Soccer (MLS) club Toronto FC.
His first matches in charge of Indonesia will come during the FIFA Series in Jakarta in March. Herdman will also lead the team at the ASEAN Football Federation Championships in July and August, as Indonesia aims to win the regional title for the first time.
